Neighbors turn homeowner's private front yard bench into a public bus stop seat, then complain when homeowner removes after finding trash and dirty diapers: ‘Nobody asked me if they could use it’

  • AITJ for removing a bench from my front yard that the neighborhood started treating as public property?
  • There's a wooden bench at the edge of my front yard that my grandfather built years ago. It's technically on my property but faces the sidewalk.

  • A few months ago the school district moved the bus stop right in front of my house. Parents started sitting on the bench while waiting with their kids, which I had no problem with.

  • Then people started leaving coffee cups, snack wrappers and even a bag of dirty diapers next to it. I asked a couple of parents to clean up after themselves but nothing really changed.

  • Last weekend I moved the bench onto my porch. My mom has bad knees and I figured she could actually use it when she comes over.

  • Yesterday a neighbor knocked and asked why I'd removed the "bus stop bench." I explained and she said it was selfish because some parents have to stand outside for 15 minutes now. She also mentioned one grandmother who apparently relied on it because she can't stand very long.

  • I feel bad about that part, but nobody ever asked me if they could use the bench in the first place. It just sort of became a neighborhood thing.

  • Yellow school bus at a school bus stop.
  • BorkBorkWrangler NTJ. You are a private home owner not a public works department. People took advantage and ruined it for everyone else. If anyone else comes over, point them in the direction of people leaving trash and dirty diapers in your front yard.

  • auntie_beans No school-aged child needs to have a parent at a school bus stop. Seriously. It's one of the few places where they can feel independent, chat with other neighborhood kids without adults listening, and acquire the pride of accomplishment of walking to-from their houses like a big person. And they don't need to sit on a bench to sip a latte, either.

  • ScipioTheGreatest If only they cared when people were littering around the bus stop bench. But they didn't then, they only care now that their convenience was removed, so as the ol' saying goes, "F 'em!" NTJ.

  • Horsewithasword NTJ if it's that big of a deal they can spend money on a lawn chair.

  • The homeowner's front yard, where a wooden bench their grandfather built, became a seating area.
  • Muted Piccolo278 If you don't have school aged children who take the bus I would be tempted to call the school district, explain the trash problem and your lack of kids and ask if they could move the bus stop away from your property.

  • WasWawa NTJ. You are well within your rights to tell them exactly what you posted here. The bench was there because your grandfather put it there. You didn't mind so much when people began using it to wait for their kids, but when they started leaving trash around, it became a problem and you had no choice.

  • BeautifulChaosEnergy Any more complaints just tell them that you got sick of cleaning up other people's garbage and they need to direct their ire at the litter bugs not you

  • CatPerson88 NTJ Those parents can do what my entitled selfish neighbors do: drive their cars and wait at the bus stop in their vehicles, blocking traffic

  • PhoenixGate69 NTJ It sounds like the grandma is in need of a mobility device if she can't stand that long and is responsible for seeing the kids onto the bus. Also, I would be suspicious that the school district moved the bus stop because of the bench and didn't bother to check if it was on private or public property.

  • Rough_Pie_5322 NTJ. I'd ask the school district to move the bus stop again because it's causing issues. If you had children, it would be one thing. And terribly convenient. But if you don't, why is the bus stop in front of your house?

  • Stock-Mountain-6063 This is why the walkers that have the seats on them were invented. They will destroy that bench eventually so protect it especially if your grandfather made it. The school board can take care of a bench if necessary

  • Salt_My_Watermelon NTJ you don't need the liability if someone gets hurt while trespassing.
